Finding Connection with God When You Feel Numb

Feeling numb can be an isolating and distressing experience, especially when it comes to your spiritual life. You might feel disconnected from yourself, your emotions, and even deeper-from God. God is always present, even when you can't feel him near. Here are some steps you can take to reconnect with God during these difficult times.

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

Start by acknowledging that feeling numb is okay. It’s a common experience and doesn’t mean that you are failing in your faith. God understands your struggles and meets you where you are.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." – Psalm 34:18

2. Seek Silence and Stillness

In our busy lives, it’s easy to drown out our feelings with noise and activity. Take intentional time to sit in silence and be with God. This can be a powerful way to open yourself up to God’s presence.

  • Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.

  • Sit comfortably and take deep breaths.

  • Allow your thoughts to settle, and invite God into the quiet.

3. Engage in Prayer

Prayer is a direct line of communication with God. When words fail, remember that God knows your heart. Try these different forms of prayer:

  • Silent Prayer: Simply sit with God in silence. Your presence is enough.

  • Written Prayer: Write down your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, putting pen to paper can help you express what’s hard to say out loud.

  • Scripted Prayers: Use prayers from Scripture or prayer books. These can give you words when you have none.

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." – Romans 8:26

4. Read Scripture

God’s Word is a source of comfort and guidance. Choose passages that remind you of God’s love and presence. Here are a few to start with:

  • Psalm 23:1-4

  • Isaiah 41:10

  • Matthew 11:28-30

Read these slowly and reflect on their meaning. Let the words wash over you and reassure you of God’s constant presence.

5. Connect with Nature

Sometimes, stepping outside and immersing yourself in God’s creation can help you feel His presence more tangibly. Take a walk in a park, sit by a river, or simply spend time in your backyard. Pay attention to the sights, sounds, and smells around you, and thank God for the beauty of His creation.

"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." – Romans 1:20

6. Seek Community

You are not alone in your feelings of numbness. Reach out to trusted friends, family, or members of your faith community. Share your struggles and allow them to support you in prayer and encouragement. Sometimes hearing about others’ experiences with God can reignite your own faith.

7. Practice Gratitude

Even when you feel numb, there are always things to be thankful for. Make a habit of writing down a few things you are grateful for each day. This practice can shift your focus from what’s lacking to the blessings in your life, however small they may be.

8. Be Patient with Yourself

Healing and reconnecting with God can take time. Be patient and compassionate with yourself. Trust that God is working in your life, even when you can’t see or feel it.

"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." – Exodus 14:14

Remember, this numbness is a temporary state, and God’s love for you is constant and unchanging. Keep seeking Him, and in time, you will feel His presence and love again.
