how i can help
EMDR is a research-based approach to therapy that targets your body's inherent self-healing abilities
By the time you’ve made it here- your mind is feeling a bit like a disheveled room in your home. EMDR is the route to getting this room cleaned up and organized so that you can use it again without flashing back to what it used to look like and feel like to be in that space.
Through the use of EMDR, we will be:
Identifying the Stressors: This room has various items scattered all over, making it hard to navigate or find anything. Similarly, you may have disorganized and overwhelming thoughts, emotions, or distressing experiences that you’re struggling to make sense of.
Sorting and Organizing: In EMDR, just as you would start by sorting through the items in the room, we will work on sorting through your thoughts and emotions. to break down the complexity and create a map of your lived experiences.
Cleaning and Reorganizing: You will be guided through a process similar to cleaning up the burdened mental space. This will involve using tapping or eye movements to reprocess your experiences in a more adaptive way, like tidying up the room and putting things in their proper place, making it more manageable.
Creating a Sense of Order: EMDR aims to bring order to the mental clutter, much like organizing a room so that it's easier to navigate. By reprocessing thoughts and emotions, your brain will create a more structured and less distressing mental space.
Reducing Emotional Distress: Ultimately, the goal of EMDR is to reduce your emotional pains related to your experiences, similar to how tidying up a room can make it more functional and less overwhelming. This process helps you regain control over your thoughts, feelings, and your past.
EMDR helps you break free from your past and fully embrace the present. You will be able to see your current experiences more clearly and begin to develop healthier patterns of thinking and balanced relationships. You get to change the way you experience sensory triggers from your past and live in the NOW instead of being swept back into your PAST.
Using EMDR, you will learn to store these messages in your long-term memory, allowing your brain and body to relax. You can release old belief patterns, and develop a healthier view of yourself and your relationships. You can change how you interact with your spouse and your children, deepen your compassion and connections with others and with yourself, and expand your overall ability to balance your emotions.
What to expect:
EMDR consists of 8 distinct phases. During our work together we will process through these phases at a pace that is honoring to you.
Phase 1: History Taking and Treatment Planning
Just like it sounds, we will explore a general timeline of your life experiences. It’s okay if you don't remember a lot about your past or lived experience or what order it occurred in. This is completely normal and acceptable. EMDR is still effective, even when you have limited access to these memories. We will discuss your specific EMDR treatment plan and the goals you are looking to achieve.
Phase 2: Preparation
Because EMDR work can be intensive, this phase is focused on gaining familiarity with what to expect and how EMDR works. During the preparation phase we will build up your internal and external coping skills. We'll look at how your five senses can help you, and we'll practice techniques to help you stay calm after tough sessions without feeling too overwhelmed.
Phase 3: Assessment
We will begin to look at which memory or emotion you want to work on. This decision will be based on information provided during history taking. We will look together at beliefs you hold about yourself based on earlier life events and how you wish to change these beliefs.
Phase 4: Desensitization
During this phase we will begin using Bilateral Stimulation (alternating tapping on your left and right sides, or side to side eye movements). The goal of this phase is to reduce the emotional distress associated with the memory or emotion you chose to work on from phase 3.
Phase 5: Installation
You will begin adopting positive beliefs about yourself associated with the previously distressing event. These positive beliefs will begin to replace the limiting thoughts you held about yourself at the beginning of this process.
Phase 6: Body Scan
In this phase, we pay attention to any physical tension in your body that may be related to the trauma. You'll be guided through steps to release this tension if it hasn't happened naturally.
Phase 7: Closure
As we prepare to finish up your EMDR session, we will implement your specific coping skills to ensure stability. This may include breath work, grounding exercises, or guided imagery exercises, all of which are taught and practiced during phase 2.
Phase 8: Re-Evaluation
In this final phase, we will check in with the progress you have made, assessing for any remaining distress related to the target memory or emotion. If needed, we will revisit phase 3, or move to another target memory at this time.
