What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your reaction to something that stresses, frightens, or concerns you in any way.

You’ve felt it throughout the years in different scenarios. Think of your nerves during a job interview, the first time you left your child with a sitter, or when your mom had major surgery.

That uneasiness is natural during many situations—you are only human, after all! It typically flows in and out without significant consequences.

But when anxiety is severe, long-lasting, and hard to control, it can wreak havoc on your life. Physical, emotional, and mental symptoms can affect your well-being, relationships, and ability to perform everyday activities (e.g., working, going to school, exercising, and taking care of your family).

What Is Therapy for Anxiety?

Therapy for anxiety can support you in addressing your symptoms and truly celebrating your life. You will meet with a mental health professional to help you understand your anxiety (its roots, signs, and triggers), shift any contributing factors, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Therapy for anxiety is not about “curing” or “wiping out” your anxiety. The goal is to foster awareness and resources to handle it when it emerges.

Do I Need Therapy for Anxiety?

While occasional anxiety is completely normal, unhealthy anxiety doesn’t have to be a constant in your path.

We live in a world where doing more and being the best is worshipped, even if that means sacrificing our mental well-being. So many of us, especially women, may think we must simply deal with or push through our anxiety on our own.

On the other hand, our kids may not comprehend or know how to talk about it, so they might act out, struggle with their emotions, or engage in unusual behaviors.

So, the first step is to watch out for the following signs of unhealthy anxiety:

Anxiety Symptoms

  • Extreme worry or fear
  • Gastrointestinal issues, nausea, or dizziness
  • Impending doom or despair
  • Lack of energy and focus
  • Mood changes
  • Overwhelming emotions
  • Pain or tension
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Ruminating thoughts
  • Shaking and sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sleep problems

If you or your loved ones are exhibiting any of these symptoms, do not wait. Therapy can help you.

How Can Therapy Help With Anxiety?

Therapy for anxiety can support you to…

Notice

Anxiety may come along given your genetic history, after a major life event, emotional wound, or stressor, or without an obvious explanation.

Therapy invites you to gently explore your symptoms, triggers, and patterns to get to the root of your anxiety. You’ll connect the dots, uncover unhelpful cycles, and become more present to learn about yourself.

Reframe

As you notice possible sources and contributing factors to your anxiety, you can identify the steps needed to bring meaningful change.

We’ll work together to question, shift, and unlearn distorted thoughts, harmful emotions, and problematic behaviors to create space for transformation.

Advocate

Learning and unlearning empower you with awareness and confidence to advocate for yourself, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Throughout your healing journey, you’ll also gain practical skills and strategies to listen to your needs, respect your boundaries, and restore balance when anxiety rushes in.
